End plastic waste

Subs is a jandal company born in New Zealand, on a mission dedicated to fighting the global plastic crisis and helping to end plastic waste by producing all of our products from recycled materials using circular economy manufacturing practices.

Founded in 2016, Subs is a social enterprise that gives YOU the ability to take action directly against the global plastic pollution crisis, simply by buying a pair of our flip-flops, while at the same time enjoying a highly durable and recyclable pair of jandals to wear.

Recycled materials is our business

We proudly uphold the use of recycled materials in all of our products. Plastic that is otherwise bound for landfills is one of the main components of recycled plastic that we currently source for Subs' jandals, totes, satchels & tees,

mostly coming from commercial, post-consumer, and industrial plastic waste,

plus some that we recover directly from the ocean.

Beach cleans - one pair, one kg pledge

We pledge to pull one kilo (2.20 lb) of marine debris (plastic waste) from global ocean ecosystems for every pair of Subs sold, your pair of recycled material jandals represents the one kg of marine debris that YOU removed directly from the ocean!

Our global impact to date:

197,748 kg (435,960 lb) of marine debris removed from our ocean ecosystems

15,046 kilograms (33,171 lb) of plastic waste recycled into Subs' signature products!

Circular economy manufacturing - recycle your pair

You can recycle your Subs when they are worn out beyond use, which will take ages,  and we have heard from some customers who have been wearing their pairs for as long as 5 and a half years and they are still going strong! We stand by the durability of our products, these jandals are going to last you the distance.

But when they do eventually wear out and you want a new pair, contact us to find out how you can send them back to us for recycling and we'll give you a 20% discount on your next purchase as well.

We have the ability to transform worn out returned pairs into new ones by shredding them to pieces and putting the materials back through the plastic injection machinery, giving the recycled materials yet another cycle of use, now that's what we call sustainable!

Right to repair - replace your straps

When a jandal blowout occurs and the plug snaps off too, that generally means the unfortunate end of your jandals and time for a new pair. That's not ideal when your soles still have plenty of life left in them though, and repairing your jandals is not a service you'll see every day from jandal companies, but guess what?

Yes, we have a strap replacement service!

Don't worry, our straps will not snap easily, we've had reviews from customers that have worn their pairs of Subs for as long as five and a half years before requiring a replacement set of straps. And with wear and tear over that long, it's only natural that eventually, a strap plug will break, but luckily we have a strap replacement service so you can repair your trusty pair of Subs for more summers to come.

Soles: Subs' sole formula ensures that you get both durability and comfort. As soon as you start wearing your Subs flip-flops they will quickly mold to your feet, providing you with sturdy, long-lasting comfort. You will have a soft cushion of comfort with every step you take. Our tapered footbed guarantees you some extra durability where it's needed most in the heel.

Straps: Our flip-flop straps are designed and positioned so that you will not experience any irritation between your toes. The plugs are strong and durable as well, meaning that they will not easily blow out on you.

Performance: Subs flip-flops perform extremely well in wet conditions and off the beaten track situations too. The design on both the top and bottom of the soles allows you to get a great grip on any surface you happen to traverse in your adventures.

Roots

Subs was founded by Lambie brothers Andrew (left) & Justin in 2016. Our story starts way back though, in Kyle, Mid Canterbury, New Zealand in the late 1980s, where we grew up on a farm bordering a beach off of the South West Pacific Ocean coast. Even back then it was clear to us how our beaches were being affected by plastic waste, with wave after wave of plastic waste washing ashore with each new tide. Little did we know at that time that this very problem we identified on our local beach back in the late 80's would in fact become a worldwide plastic crisis.

Having been in the footwear industry for 7 years prior to founding Subs, we realised we were in a position where we could use recycled plastic waste instead of virgin plastic in making jandals, and the idea was born to create a product that could sustain the reduction of plastic in our ocean ecosystems, as well as using recycled plastic in our products.

The level of innovation here is also impressive: regenerating marine debris degraded by the sun and wind and ocean currents is no mean feat.

At first glance they look like any other jandal. But the plastic in your Subs' jandal sole could have once been floating in the ocean as plastic pollution.

Environmentally conscious brand Subs have worked out a way to transform plastic pollution into a solution… flip flops, or thongs as they call them in Australia. These guys walk the walk and run all sorts of awesome initiatives including marine debris clean ups. The range of colours – yellow, pink blue, green to name but a few – and choice between regular and slender means subs are slowly taking over the world and should really be on your feet too.

For every pair of jandals sold, they pledge to remove half a kilogram of plastic from the oceans. And when the jandals themselves wear out, customers can simply send them back to Subs. They'll be ground up into pellets and go through the whole manufacturing process again. It's a completely circular process. "Although we haven't had any sent back yet – perhaps we've made them too well," Andrew jokes.
