Take a look at some of our recent custom jandal work where we had the honour of working with and making custom branded jandals for Piha Surf Life Saving Club.
The first time I ever went to Piha beach I was a uni student doing a road trip up north from the South Island and didn't even own a pair of jandals, what a big oopsy that was! I remember the sand being so hot it was scalding to the touch of my bare feet, a pair of Subs would've gone down a treat back in those days!
Piha is truly a magnificent spot in NZ, and if you've ever been caught in a rip out there, you'll know why the Piha Surf Life Saving Club lifeguards are so important to the safety of the beach goers, as I myself was caught in a rip there back in the day and it was certainly one of the scariest moments of my existence!
That same day, out there treading water in the swell, bobbing up and down and within seconds the person I was next to and the shoreline quickly vanished and it was at that moment when I realised 'you're in a rip, go with it'. Anyone who has been in this situation will tell you a lot goes through your mind at that moment, when you can't see the shore or anyone anymore and don't know how far you're going to be pulled out to sea. But as it happened for me, to my relief, I suddenly found myself amongst some surfers waiting to catch a wave in and also one of the surfers was a Piha SLSC lifeguard, whom, if I remember correctly (it was 25 years ago, the exact words are a bit hazy) asked me if I "need a lift" and promptly helped me on to their board and eventually brought me back in to shore.
I simply can not express how grateful I was in that moment to the lifeguard for rescuing me, highlighting the important rescue work that the Piha SLSC do, and the reason for the club making custom jandals in the first place, so they can raise funds and continue to do the great work that they do in keeping us safe from the dangers of the ocean.
