What are Subs anyway?

Updated: Jul 8, 2020

Thanks once again for your interest and support in our unique and fantastic products, Subs - the only "100% recycled and recyclable Jandals in the world".

It was back in 2016 when Justin Lambie, inventor, and co-founder of SUBS had an idea that would change the world of flip-flops forever.

Way back when in the late '80s growing up on a farm next to the Pacific Ocean in Dorie, mid-Canterbury New Zealand, he saw the effects of plastic waste washing up on his local beach. The plastic waste he found made an impression on him, plastic from products he'd never seen before in a variety of unfamiliar Asian languages.

Fast-forward to adulthood, Justin started in the footwear industry in 2012 in another jandal company until 2016. His business partner from that company decided to take everything for himself, leaving Justin out of their business, but he wasn't about to give up so easily.

Making shoes and footwear from plastic is no secret, but what about from recycled plastic? That is the question Justin sought to find the answer, and his journey into recycled plastic jandal manufacturing began.

At the time of leaving his previous business, it was all over the news and social media about plastic pollution in our oceans and this reminded him of that beach back in Dorie, NZ by the Pacific. The idea was born in 2016, where Justin's brother Andrew enters the scene, to create a new brand of jandals with a focus on using recycled plastic in a circular economy and to help the earth by removing ocean plastic from our coasts. And that is exactly what Subs are, made from recycled plastic in a circular economy, and for every pair sold 1 kilo of ocean plastic is removed from beaches all over the place.

Since then Subs has seen continued growth within its core value of sustainable innovation and circular economy manufacturing - with an ever-increasing range of products developed, from bags made from recycled PET bottles to tee-shirts recycled from PET bottles and fishing nets.
